In rather shocking news, ESPN announced the firing of Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III on Thursday, just a little more than a week before the start of the college football season.

According to The Athletic , ESPN decided for financial reasons as it nears the end of its fiscal year in September. Griffin had two years remaining on his deal.

During his radio show, ESPN's Paul Finebaum was questioned by a caller about his thoughts on the Griffin news. Finebaum responded that he prefers not to comment on other individuals at the company because he is unaware of the factors influencing those decisions. Nonetheless, he expressed surprise upon learning about the firing.

"I was as surprised about that news as I'm sure you were," Finebaum said.

Griffin was considered strongly for the No. 2 college football game analyst position at ESPN last season, but according to reports, Greg McElroy was ultimately hired instead of him.

Griffin took to social media and said, "Thankful for so many people in my time at ESPN who helped me grow because they are some of the best in the business. … What people sometimes fail to realize is none of this is possible without you guys, the FANS. So THANK YOU to everyone who has supported my family through my playing days and broadcast career so far."

Only time will reveal if the Heisman winner can bounce back and what lies ahead for his once promising career.
