Rutgers fans and Big Ten followers were certainly taken aback by the news late Friday afternoon that Scarlet Knights athletic director Pat Hobbs was resigning.

Brian Fonseca with NJ.com reported the news to Twitter, which you can see a bit further below, noting that Hobbs' departure was "effective immediately." The decision appeared to hit Rutgers fans from completely out of nowhere, too.

In the replies to Fonseca's tweet, many fans were left astonished by the sudden resignation. Take a look at some of them:

One account, named Forno, couldn't believe what Hobbs had done.

"The most pivotal, most anticipated athletic year for Rutgers possibly EVER…AD Pat Hobbs ABRUPTLY resigns," he tweeted. "We joke about the RU Screw but my goodness you have GOT to me kidding me."

"Of course when the most anticipated athletics season is about to start, there’s turmoil..very on cue Rutgers.." tweeted one account named Joe Hollins.

A few users merely responded with a slew of question marks, wondering what could have possibly precipitated this move. Others commented variations of "what" and "whoa" with an "oh boy" and an "uh oh" in there too. A few nervous fans leaped to conclusions and now expect incoming bad news.

"I hope there isn't some huge scandal coming down soon about Rutgers athletics," tweeted out Rob from LBI. "Dang...wonder what is coming down the pike. Hopefully not too bad," added njKnighttime.

Currently, Deputy AD Ryan Pisarri is expected to serve as the interim in the wake of the unexpected departure of Hobbs, who had served as athletic director at Rutgers since 2015.

Something happen. The health thing is BS. Probably having an affair or hiding behavior of coaches or athletes.
