Buffalo Bills at Pittsburgh Steelers: Damar Hamlin Coming Home - Tracker
By Mike Fisher,
2024-08-16
AUG 16 HOMECOMING Damar Hamlin is home this week in Pittsburgh, for both a joint practice and preseason game as a member of the Bills. And he's taking nothing for granted.
"I really cherished that practice," said Hamlin. "We are so in a rush to get off the field after getting through a practice, but today I really tried to slow myself down and enjoy the moment because this was something special to me."
Hamlin played in the stadium in both high school and college, and made plenty of memories in the area. ... and he's expecting over 50 friends and family to be in attendance at the Bills' preseason game against Pittsburgh, where he played at Pitt before being selected by the Bills in the sixth round of the 2021 Draft.
AUG 15 DB MOVES The Steelers on Thursday announced that they have signed defensive back Kiondre Thomas. They placed defensive back Grayland Arnoldon injured reserve in a corresponding move.
Thomas has bounced around in the NFL and the UFL.
Arnold - who has played part-time in Houston in the last three seasons - was in the mix for snaps before a calf injury sidelined him.
AUG 14 SURPRISE RACE? The Pittsburgh Steelers will get another chance to show their stuff this weekend as the Buffalo Bills come to town for preseason Game 2 ... and maybe the Steelers get their first look at Russell Wilson.
Why does it matter?
Maybe because more than ever, we don't know that he's the starter over Justin Fields.
Said NFL insider Ian Rapoport of the competition: "It's a lot more open than I probably thought. And probably a lot more open than it would've been had Russell Wilson not get injured. But this is all going to play out over the next couple weeks and I for sure look forward to this one."
With Wilson out while nursing that calf, Fields has at the very least shown off his athleticism - even amid some sloppiness.
But as Rapoport said, "Part of the issue is Justin Fields has played really well ... You kind of wonder, can Justin Fields ... edge out Russell Wilson?"
AUG 8 SUPER DESHAUN? Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson is, according to backup Jameis Winston, "built for resilience.''
And for the Super Bowl.
"He's on a mission to be the best quarterback that he can possibly be,'' Winston said this week. "He knows the expectations that a lot of people have for him, but if you think that Deshaun Watson has less expectations than all the fans and all of you have for him, then you're short-changing yourselves. He has high expectations for himself. He wants to be and will be a Super Bowl-winning quarterback. And honestly, that's what I'm here for."
AUG 8 REUNION The Steelers have signed more depth at safety on Thursday with the "re-addition'' of Jalen Elliott, who spent time on Pittsburgh’s practice squad last season.
Elliott was on this roster just a month ago, but Pittsburgh waived him in July to make room for linebacker Tyler Matakevich. He's still here, but to clear room on the 90-man roster, defensive back Nate Meadors has been released with an injury designation.
AUGUST 7 - STEELERS QB REVEALED? - With the preseason set to begin for teams around the league heading into the weekend, teams are releasing their initial depth charts.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of those teams that have released their first depth chart for the upcoming season. While there is still plenty of time for it to change before Week 1, it didn't feature many surprises, including at quarterback, where many predicted throughout the offseason that Russell Wilson would be the listed starter.
Wilson's listing as the starter for the Cleveland Browns ' rival is despite having missed the first two weeks of training camp due to a calf injury. However, even with Justin Fields receiving more reps with the first-team offense than originally planned, he hasn't been able to unseat Wilson, at least yet.
