Jordan Chiles Decides on Potential Return of Bronze Medal

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) ruled Thursday that Romania may present gymnast Ana Barbosu with a bronze medal for her result in the Floor Exercise finals at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Barbosu was initially pushed off the podium after a last-second score change saw American gymnast Jordan Chiles jump two spots into third place.

But with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and IOC now ruling that score change invalid, Chiles has been asked to return her bronze medal.

Chiles is reportedly still in possession of her bronze medal. And according to Christine Brennan of USA Today, there are "no plans" for Chiles to return it.

USA Gymnastics plans to appeal what the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee called “significant procedural errors” made by the CAS.

The CAS ruled that a score inquiry issued by U.S. coach Cecile Landi was made outside of the allowed one-minute window. USA Gymnastics recently sent new video evidence showing the inquiry was made in time, but that new footage was denied.

Chiles posted her first public remarks since the decision earlier this week.

"I am now confronted with one of the most challenging moments of my career. Believe me when I say I have had many," Chiles wrote. "I will approach this challenge as I have others — and will make every effort to ensure that justice is done. I believe that at the end of this journey, the people in control will do the right thing."
