Prescott vs Mahomes: ESPN Analyst Takes Cowboys QB?

FRISCO — Patrick Mahomes' exists in his own category among NFL quarterbacks, having fast-tracked his way to a Hall of Fame career in only seven seasons.

The three-time Super Bowl champion has a mystique about his game, not just in his unparalleled playmaking abilities on the field. It's a seemingly unstoppable aura that negates the best efforts of his opponents, especially when the stakes are at their highest.

Picking from the crop of players that he has matched up against and defeated (some on multiple occasions) seems a fruitless trial. Nonetheless, Gary Striewski had a guess this week on ESPN's First Take .

When asked which quarterback he would pick to beat Mahomes head-to-head, he picked Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys . This choice of course boiled the tensions of the anti-Cowboys crowd online and Stephen A. Smith, the leader of that bandwagon.

(Smith pretended to be "furious'' and "nonplussed'' - a good bit.)

How has he fared against Mahomes in his career? He has a record of 1-1 with the best performance coming in 2017 when he threw for 249 yards and two touchdowns in a 28-17 Cowboys victory. The next matchup between the teams will not come until next season.

Besides some his peers around the league who have secured long term deals and have no reasonable availability to other teams, Prescott is arguably the most coveted player in football, posting exceptional numbers through his MVP candidacy in 2023 that ultimately fell short.

One would think that reality would spur the Cowboys into action in regard to his extension, yet his future with the team remains uncertain.

The knock on the him remains his lack of playoff success, which remains an undeniable stain on his record.

That can change with one campaign. But after several promising Dallas teams have faltered with him at the helm of the offense, those prospects wane with each failed attempt.

While Prescott may not be the clear-cut option to take Mahomes down, other quarterbacks traditionally ranked higher than the Cowboys' star have tried and failed multiple times.

The best hope of ending Mahomes' reign might not be another team or its quarterback. Instead, a major string of bad luck might have to put an end to the Chiefs' dynasty.
