Steelers To Finish 6-11, Predicts Analyst (Really?)

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been a consistent competitor in the NFL for a long time in one category, with the team avoiding last place in their division since 1988. However, NFL analyst Will Brinson from CBS Sports has made a bold prediction , suggesting that the Steelers' remarkable streak might come to an end in 2024.

According to Brinson, the Steelers will finish with a 6-11 record, landing in the last place of the AFC North for the first time in over three decades.

    Wait. What? ... a 6-11 mark?

Brinson's prediction hinges on what he sees as significant quarterback concerns in Pittsburgh. The Steelers made a notable upgrade to Russell Wilson , with Justin Fields as a backup option. However, Wilson’s limited participation in training camp due to injury has created uncertainty around the position. Fields, known for his athletic prowess, has shown potential, but Brinson questions whether his style will translate into consistent wins for the Steelers.

The departure of wide receiver Diontae Johnson also raises questions about the team's offensive depth. While George Pickens remains a key weapon with high upside, the Steelers are relying on players like Van Jefferson , Calvin Austin III , and Roman Wilson to step up during the season. Although Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren provide a strong ground game, Brinson doubts the offense will be explosive under the current scheme.

Defensively, the Steelers boast a unit that could be among the top five in the league, especially with T.J. Watt leading the charge. However, Watt’s health is crucial, as the team’s defensive performance historically drops when he’s out of the lineup. Brinson’s prediction hinges on the defense staying healthy and consistent throughout the season.

In contrast, Brinson projects the Baltimore Ravens to win the division at 12-5, followed by the Cincinnati Bengals at 11-6, and the Cleveland Browns at 7-10, leaving the Steelers at the bottom.

Being that bad would break a long-standing streak around here, a tradition, really.

While this prediction is bold, history is against the writer Brinson. The Steelers haven’t finished in last place since 1988, and head coach Mike Tomlin has never had a losing season. Coming off a 10-win season with key upgrades at quarterback and the offensive line, the Steelers are well-positioned to compete.

It remains to be seen if this is the year that history breaks against Pittsburgh, but betting against Tomlin and his squad is always risky.
