The Cincinnati Reds pitching rotation has a big hole to fill.

At least for the next 15 days.

The Reds announced on Saturday that All Star Pitcher Hunter Greene was placed on the 15-Day injured list with right elbow soreness. The team also stated that the move to the IL will be retroactive to August 14th. The team has yet to name his replacement on the active roster and is not expected to on Saturday.

Greene has had a remarkable season, being named to his first All Star game in July, and has slowly climbed the ranks as a potential candidate for National League Cy Young Award at the end of the season.

In his last start against the St. Louis Cardinals, he pitched seven innings and allowed just one run off four hits and a walk while striking out eight. It was his fourth consecutive outing with over 100 pitches and fifth over his last six.

The earliest Greene can return realistically is the beginning of September, and that will most likely depend on whether the Reds are still within reach of a playoff spot. In the month of August, he has a 1.89 ERA across 19 innings of work. If he can return when able he is expected to miss two scheduled starts.

The Reds still have a few days to determine who will take his place in the rotation as his spot does not come up until the first game of the road trip on Monday against the Toronto Blue Jays.
