NHL Insider Reveals Truth Behind Philip Broberg's Offer Sheet Signing

    By Antonio Losada,

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman shed light on the strained relationship between Edmonton Oilers defenseman Philip Broberg and the team.

Friedman suggested that the bond may have been irreparably damaged long before the St. Louis Blues decided to submit an offer sheet for his services.

Speaking on the 32 Thoughts podcast on August 14 , Friedman revealed that Broberg requested a trade in December 2023, and despite a brief resurgence during the playoffs, the young defenseman might never have fully changed his mind.

"When the offer sheets from the St. Louis Blues were tendered, it only confirmed what had been brewing for months," Friedman said.

The insider revealed that Broberg did not hesitate to sign the offer sheet worth $4.58 million, despite his solid playoff performance with Edmonton leading some to think he'd prefer to stay put in Edmonton instead of trying to move on from this to a new chapter in his career.

“I’m just not convinced he ever changed his mind,” Friedman added.

Broberg’s frustration may stem from his struggles to secure a regular spot on the Oilers’ roster, particularly under former coach Jay Woodcroft before he was fired with the season already underway. Woodcroft’s lineup decisions left Broberg with limited minutes, hampering his development and ultimately leading to a stint in the minors with Bakersfield.

It didn't help that Oilers GM Ken Holland didn't commit to signing the Oilers blueliner to an expensive, long-term contract. It's also worth noting that Edmont is navigating a very tight cap situation with superstar players Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl pending signing their humongous extensions next summer and two years from now.
