Jordan Chiles Sends a Clear Message to IOC About Returning Bronze Medal

While Ana Barbosu may have been awarded an Olympic bronze medal on Friday in Romania, the one awarded to USA gymnast Jordan Chiles in Paris after she placed third in the floor exercise at the 2024 Olympics is still stateside.

And according to Christine Brennan of USA Today, it sounds like that was by design as Chiles and the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee send a clear message to the International Olympic Committee.

“Jordan Chiles is in the United States and still has possession of the bronze medal that was awarded to her in the floor exercise at the Paris Olympics, two people with knowledge of the situation who did not want to be identified have told USA Today Sports,” Brennan wrote . “There are no plans for Chiles to give the bronze medal back as U.S. officials say they plan to appeal what the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee said were ‘significant procedural errors’ by CAS.”

The Court of Arbitration for Sport announced that its own rules prohibited it from reconsidering Chiles’ case and reversing the decsision that led to her being stripped of the bronze medal, despite being provided time-stamped video evidence from USA Gymnastics that shows coach Cecile Landi submitted her score inquiry twice in the International Gymnastics Federation’s one-minute window allowed after a routine is scored.

Chiles released a statement on Aug. 15 that seems to support the USOPC’s plan to bring its appeal to the Swiss Federal Tribunal — the highest court in Switzerland, and the only one that can overrule a decision by the Court of Arbitration in Sport.

“I will approach this challenge as I have others and will make every effort to ensure that justice is done,” Chiles said . “I believe at the end of this journey, the people in charge will do the right thing.”
