Lance vs. Rush: A Depth-Chart Move and New QB2?

    By Adam Schultz,

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Trey Lance had an up-and-down first preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams, but in his second outing vs. the Las Vegas Raiders, Lance had more ups than downs .

In a performance that will surely be graded far better than his first preseason game, Lance looked far more comfortable in Mike McCarthy's system while still having the odd throw that was high.

Lance led long drives that, this time, ended in touchdowns. He finished his day completing 16 of his 24 passes for 150 yards and a passing touchdown. He also had five rushing attempts for 36 yards and a touchdown to cap off what was overall a good display.

Lance was very efficient in working with the offense and showed off his arm strength multiple times. While he does tend to make the easy throws look hard, McCarthy will no doubt be pleased with what he saw from Lance.

A beautifully lofted pass to rookie Ryan Flournoy for Dallas' first preseason touchdown was the type of pass Lance missed a week ago, but not this time.

In what was in stark contrast to last week, Lance hit his receivers in stride multiple times to allow more yards after the catch. A week ago, passes were behind and above his receivers.

Lance led a 16-play, 76-yard touchdown drive in the second quarter, a nine-yard touchdown drive, and a 15-play, 98-yard touchdown drive in the fourth quarter as things have begun to click.

While yes, they are small gains, but they are gains nonetheless. Lance also showed how dangerous he can be with his legs, by picking up a huge gain at the end of the half before sliding to allow Brandon "Butter" Aubrey to nail a 66-yard field goal.

All in all, Lance's performance wasn't great, but it was far better than his outing against the Rams, and he looked more comfortable and confident in what he was being asked to do.

Was it enough to overtake Cooper Rush as Dak Prescott's backup? A new QB2? It's hard to envision, at this moment, Dallas "trusting'' Lance over Rush in a real game. But that was once sort of the plan. And now it's more possible than it was a week ago?

Depth-chart movement? We'll let the cake bake on that one.
