College Football Legend Colt McCoy Reveals Surprising New Career

    By Kevin Matthew Borba,

After establishing himself as one of the best college football quarterbacks that the sport had seen while at Texas, Colt McCoy went on to have a 14-year career in the NFL.

On Monday, it was revealed that his time as an athlete has come to an end, as the 37-year-old is officially retiring from the NFL.

"Thank you football," McCoy posted on social media . "Excited for the next chapter."

However, we didn't have to wait long to see what was next for McCoy as it was also reported that he would be jumping in the booth to be an analyst for NBC Sports. There, he will be helping with their Big Ten Coverage.

Somewhat of a shocking move since players who jump into the media usually return to the conference they played in, but for McCoy, his Longhorns are now in the SEC.

Per a release , he will be teaming up with Paul Burmeister (Play-by-Play) and Kathryn Tappen (Sideline Reporter), and will debut during the Week 2 showdown between Colorado and Nebraska.

The Longhorns are still hoping that they'll one day have someone who can muster up half of what McCoy accomplished during his time burnt orange.

He walked away from Texas having been named a Heisman Trophy finalist twice, winning a record 45 games across four seasons (2006-09), and was able to lead them to a title game. He unfortunately was knocked out of the game against Alabama due to a shoulder injury, leaving fans to wonder what would have happened had he stayed healthy.

Following his career in Austin, McCoy was drafted in the third round of the NFL draft by the Cleveland Browns. He bounced around in the NFL, starting 36 games in total and playing for six total teams. McCoy's final season of his NFL career came with the Arizona Cardinals in 2022.

His NFL career saw him play 56 total games and throw for 7,975 yards, 34 touchdowns, and 32 interceptions. He also commented on how excited he is for working with NBC.

"College football has always held a special place in my heart. With the expansion of the Big Ten and new era of college football, it is the perfect time to join NBC Sports," McCoy said. "I can't wait to share in the passion, excitement, and competitive spirit every week."

Back in June , McCoy hinted that a career in the media was something that he would be interested in, but he had never specified if it was in the booth or in the podcast world. Now, we have that answer.

What a career it was for No. 12.
