As roster cutdowns loom and the regular season approaches, the end of the NFL offseason culminates with some of the summer’s saddest hours.

For some, being released will be a chapter of adversity in a feel-good story. Others won’t hear their name called again.

Former New York Giants quarterback Colt McCoy hasn’t been on a roster since 2022. With the preseason in full swing and opportunities out of reach, it was time to close the book on playing professional football.

McCoy announced his retirement on Monday at the age of 37.

Drafted in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft, McCoy entered the league as one of college football’s most electric talents. He spent the first three years of his career with the Cleveland Browns before embarking on a gridiron journey.

After spending the 2013 season with the San Francisco 49ers, McCoy found himself backing up a series of quarterbacks in Washington.

In 2020, McCoy found himself in New York and started two games. He went 1-1, including an upset over the Seattle Seahawks. McCoy completed 40 of 66 passes with the Giants for 375 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.

The veteran backup’s final stop came with the Arizona Cardinals, where he spent two seasons.

McCoy has already made moves in his post-playing career, making content with Underdog Fantasy and announcing his next move: joining NBC Sports’ coverage of Big Ten football.
