As Utah prepares for a new chapter in the Big 12, the Utes will introduce a new tradition at Rice-Eccles Stadium with the Utah Football Ring of Honor. Former quarterback Alex Smith will be the first player honored this season at halftime of the season opener against Southern Utah on August 29.

The Ring of Honor will include former players and coaches who have achieved the highest level in college football, the NFL, and community-focused efforts. Two new members will be added each season moving forward.

"The rich history of Utah Football has been written by so many tremendous student-athletes and coaches whose achievements have given our fans memorable moments from generation to generation," said Mark Harlan, Director of Athletics. "It is fitting that we permanently recognize the all-time greats of Utah Football with the establishment of the Ring of Honor at Rice-Eccles Stadium, and we are excited to announce Alex Smith as our first inductee."

Each former Ute honored must meet one of several criteria: own school records, be a consensus All-American, play 10+ years in the NFL, or coach a team to at least two conference championships, among others.

Alex Smith was a First-Team All-American and Heisman finalist for the Utes in 2004. He finished his career with over 5,200 passing yards and 47 touchdowns. In his final season with the Utes, Sports Illustrated named him National Player of the Year.

I am incredibly honored and humbled to become the first member of the Utah Football Ring of Honor this fall," Smith said. "Utah Football has always been and will always be a part of my family and I, and having the honor to be a permanent part of Rice-Eccles Stadium is something I will cherish for the rest of my life. A Utah Man Am I Forever."
