'Bizarre': Is Bucs Coach Todd Bowles Right on Randy Gregory?

    By TJ French,

Some of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' offseason drama was resolved during Saturday's preseason loss against the Jacksonville Jaguars. After signing a one-year deal with Tampa Bay in April, the Buccaneers reached an agreement to part ways with linebacker Randy Gregory.

In other words, they cut him.

Gregory has had his share of off-the-field issues in his tenure in the NFL, but even this is a bizarre situation. He never reported to the Bucs training camp or mandatory minicamp.

Head coach Todd Bowles is still puzzled as to why Gregory didn't report, and here's what he had to say on Sunday: "I'll never find out, but I wish him the best and we'll move on from there. Can't miss what you never had."

Gregory signed a one-year deal worth $3 million. Over the last month, Gregory has been fined over $1.3 million for never reporting to the team.

The 31-year-old linebacker played in 16 games last year with the Denver Broncos and San Francisco 49ers recording 3.5 sacks and 20 tackles. He was originally drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in 2015.

Once Gregory missed camp, that forced the Bucs to place him on the reserve/did not report list and the organization was never notified after that about where he was or what he was doing during training camp.

We understand Bowles' position; he likely doesn't even know Randy Gregory. But are the Bucs right to simply wash their hands of the mess? Maybe, except ...

It is possible that something is wrong with Gregory, something reminiscent of the issues that plagued him during his years suspended while with the Dallas Cowboys.

So maybe somebody should "find out''?

The signing of Gregory was supposed to help bolster the Buccaneers' pash rushing depth, but his absence was really just a distraction to the team. The distraction is now gone.

But Gregory's problems might very well remain.
