Mavs Contract Lands Spencer Dinwiddie on NBA Top 5 Biggest Pay-Cut List

Only a season ago, Spencer Dinwiddie earned $21.9 million before signing with the Los Angeles Lakers for the duration of the 2023-24 season. However, after making the costly decision to sign with the Lakers instead of the eventual Western Conference champions, the Dallas Mavericks, Dinwiddie charitably signed for the minimum to reunite with Luka Doncic in Big D.

HoopsHype ranked Dinwiddie relatively high in their recent list of highest pay cuts. Of the 10 players listed, Dinwiddie lands at No. 3. Last season, Dinwiddie averaged 10.5 points. However, before signing with the Lakers, acquired Dinwiddie waivers after getting bought out by the Toronto Raptors, the point guard averaged 12.6 points with the Brooklyn Nets.

Dinwiddie's time with the Lakers may have hurt the veteran guard's free-agency prospects. In the same breath, perhaps Dinwiddie chose to take less to play for a legitimate championship contender.

Also, Dinwiddie has a track record of playing stellar minutes alongside Doncic, especially in the NBA playoffs, most notably against the Phoenix Suns.

In 2022, Dinwiddie erupted for 30 points in Game 7 against the Suns, where the Mavericks sent the one-seed packing in a 123-90 beatdown.

While Dinwiddie won't have the same role as the 2022 Western Conference runner-up Mavs, anticipate the veteran guard having a bright green light in the second unit. Jaden Hardy had a solid postseason run, but Jason Kidd will remember Dinwiddie's past contributions.

Although many NBA fans will see Dinwiddie's Laker tenure as a failure, the veteran guard could accept it as a lesson learned.
