After appearing in 12 games last season and starting in 2, safety Robert Spears-Jennings is expected to play a bigger role with the Sooners in 2024. While Oklahoma is certainly stockpiled with talent at the defensive back and safety positions. Spears-Jennings seems to be making the most of his opportunities and it has led to him rising in the depth charts.

He talked about his willingness to do the “dirty work” wherever required to find a way onto the playing field.

    On being overlooked

Robert: I mean, I’m just doing dirty work in the dark. That’s what Coach preaches and that’s what I’m trying to do. So just hearing that [teammates saying that he’s overlooked] it makes me proud.

On the impact Defensive Coordinator Zac Alley has had on him

Robert: He has helped tremendously. He made it easier for us by categorizing everything and made [the scheme] ten times easier.

On just how competitive the highly talented safety group can be

Robert: It helps all around because you know that if you’re not working hard and the next guy behind you is working hard, it’s a fair opportunity and competitiveness. It just makes everybody work harder every day and push each other every day…Everybody loves each other, everybody's rooting for each other so that makes it a big thing too.
