The Mets Lose Behind Another Bad Outing

New York dropped the middle game of a three game set against Baltimore last night. Jose Quintana had another unfortunate outing.

Baltimore got to Quintana for two in the first and one in the second. The run in the second came on a sacrifice fly by former Met James McCann. McCann’s successful return did not end there.

New York got a run back in the third inning and seemed to be getting back into the game. But the Orioles then had back to back hits, setting the table for McCann’s two run blast. McCann’s fourth homer of the year was an absolute shot to left center.

McCann clearly plays with extra motivation against the team that pays him to play somewhere else. The catcher is now 5-9 with three XBH and 8 RBI against the Mets since they traded him.

The Orioles added another run in the fifth and it was 7-1. Quintana’s day was done after five rough innings.

The Mets showed nice fight in the eighth inning. J.D Martinez smacked a three run home run to cut the lead to two. New York still had two outs to work with in the inning but Pete Alonso and Harrison Bader both got out, ending the inning.

The Mets had life but that energy was quickly gone after the top of the ninth. Gunnar Henderson hit a relatively routine weak fly ball towards left field. Brandon Nimmo awkwardly approached the ball and was not able to slide to make the catch. Two runs scored and Henderson made it all the way to third. After the game, Nimmo said that reinjuring his shoulder was on his mind during the play. Nimmo said, “I was trying to get down as soft as I can, because I can’t afford trying to roll on(my shoulder again.)

It was disappointing to hear that from the Mets leader. Of course, he wanted to be back out there as soon as possible. But, if an injury is on your mind and could hinder your play, you should take another day off. A healthy Nimmo, unconcerned with a re-injury risk, makes that play 10 times out of 10.

The Mets went down easy in the bottom of the ninth and fell 9-5.
