Report: Commanders Trade For Brandon Aiyuk Back in Play

On a day when the Washington Commanders traded away a talented receiver, they might have also taken steps to acquire another one.

Thursday morning the Commanders traded 2022 first-round draft pick Jahan Dotson to the Philadelphia Eagles in a deal that netted them three 2025 picks. And later in the evening a long-time media voice connected to the San Francisco reported that Washington's pursuit of Brandon Aiyuk isn't dead after all.

"My updated information is that everything is still on the table, including all the trades you've heard about," Mike Silver of the San Francisco Chronicle said during a radio appearance . "That Steelers scenario ... and I wouldn't rule out Washington."

Aiyuk remains disgruntled with his contract in San Francisco, and is conducting a "hold-in" as he reports daily to 49ers' training camp without actually practicing. He has been connected to the Commanders in a possible trade since the start of the Summer, partly because of his close friendship with rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels from when the two played together at Arizona State.

In recent days it seemed as though the 49ers were getting close to a deal with their No. 2 receiver behind Deebo Samuel, but according to Silver no doors have been closed on Aiyuk's team for 2024 and beyond.

Without Dotson on their roster, the Commanders' receiving corps is led by Terry McLaurin and Dyami Brown. Aiyuk would be a major upgrade for new head coach Dan Quinn, and push McLaurin to be Daniels' No. 1 target.

In late June, ESPN's Adam Schefter all but buried the rumor.

"There were some conversations at one point between the 49ers and Commanders ," Schefter said. "The Commanders were interested, but they decided not to do that deal."

Maybe, in light of sending Dotson packing, that interest has been resurrected.
