We are deep into the NFL preseason at this point in August, but everyone involved continues to get acclimated to the new season.

That goes for announcers as much as it does for players and coaches.

On Thursday night in Amazon's preseason game between the Indianapolis Colts and Cincinnati Bengals, broadcaster Kirk Herbstreit went off on a tangent early in the second half that he may wish he could have taken back. Herbstreit questioned what the quarterback competition is like for the Colts between second-year QB Anthony Richardson and veteran QB Joe Flacco.

Of course, Richardson is a former first-round pick who is regarded as one of the most enticing athletes in the league this year, and Flacco is a 39-year-old journeyman who has played for six different teams in his 16-year career.

"If you're Shane Steichen, best-case scenario, Anthony Richardson lives up to what we all hope he can do," Herbstreit said. "But what if he struggles? What if he has a good game and then a bad game, a good game and then a bad game ... you've got a guy like Joe Flacco, and with the roster they have, I just wonder how they handle that if it goes down that path."

For a rookie QB who is being thrown into a difficult situation, that is a fair question to ask. However, the Colts used the No. 4 overall pick on Richardson a year ago, and liked what they saw from him before he injured his shoulder and missed the remainder of the year.

It's fair to say that NFL fans didn't take too kindly to the question from Herbstreit.

While Richardson has a lot to prove at the NFL level, what he's shown in limited action so far has been incredibly encouraging, and there seems to be a very small chance that the Colts would move on from him at hull health.

Richardson was always hurt in college, and this trend continued into his rookie year. He will be one of the worst picks of all time for the Colts. I am guessing he plays 4 or less games this year .

All I saw from the game was that Richardson has a good fast ball with no accuracy.
