Caleb Williams has moved on to the NFL, leaving USC football at a crossroads. This transition raises questions about the program's future, reminiscent of past departures like Keyshawn Johnson, Reggie Bush , and Matt Leinart.

USC has a rich history, consistently ranking among the top teams in college football. The Trojans have recorded 16 undefeated seasons and nine perfect seasons, boasting a 70% winning percentage that ranks seventh in FBS history.

However, as they prepare to join the Big Ten in 2024, concerns about their competitiveness have surfaced, particularly regarding their performance in the trenches and linebacker play.

Despite these challenges, head coach Lincoln Riley remains focused on the goal of winning national championships. The Trojans' first major test will come in Week 3 against reigning national champion Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Both teams are facing significant roster changes, with USC losing its Heisman-winning quarterback and key receivers, while Michigan lost its head coach and several star players.

Historically, USC has shown resilience in the face of adversity. After the departures of Bush and Leinart, the Trojans rebounded with a successful season, showcasing their ability to adapt.

However, the current squad faces a different challenge: a defense that struggled last season, finishing near the bottom of FBS rankings. This will be a critical area for improvement if they hope to succeed in 2024.

Despite the criticism, Trojan head coach Lincoln Riley still has his eyes on the prize.

“Our goal has been to come here and win national championships. That’s been the goal,” Riley said in an interview with CFB analyst Adam Breneman . “To do that you have to be good enough to beat everybody, including Big Ten teams and anybody else.”

USC's football dynasty began in the 1960s under coach John McKay, who transformed the program into a powerhouse.

After a rocky start, McKay led the Trojans to their first national championship in 1962 and continued to build a legacy that included multiple championships and Heisman winners. His successor, John Robinson, further solidified USC's dominance in the 1970s.

The arrival of Pete Carroll in 2000 marked a new era of success, culminating in two national championships and a string of impressive seasons. Even after Carroll's departure in 2010, the Trojans maintained a competitive edge, though they faced challenges in the following years.

Now, as USC transitions to the Big Ten, they must adapt to a new level of competition. While the Trojans have historically produced top-tier NFL talent, they will need to step up their game against formidable opponents like Michigan and Ohio State. The upcoming season will be a test of their ability to compete at this higher level.

With a mix of new challenges and familiar faces, USC football is poised for a pivotal season. The program's history of resilience suggests they have what it takes to navigate this transition and continue their legacy in college football.
