'I've Shown What I Can Do!' Pittsburgh Steelers QB Controversy

The Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t expect to have a full-blown quarterback controversy on their hands headed into the final preseason game of the year, but here we are.

Quarterback Russell Wilson injured his calf during conditioning tests, thus opening the door for Justin Fields to walk through and take all of the first-team reps. Fields used that time to build a rapport with his teammates and, to some degree, take command of the offense.

On Thursday, Fields was asked where he felt he was in the competition.

“I think I’ve shown what I can do,” Fields said

He is going to need to show it once more as reportedly both Wilson and Fields will play in their final preseason game against the Lions in Detroit on Saturday.

Following last week’s 9-3 loss to the Buffalo Bills, coach Mike Tomlin wasn’t impressed with either quarterback.

“I was really upfront with the group about it in that regard, quarterback play can’t be a problem for us,” Tomlin said. “We’ve got to be better than we were tonight in that area. You know, still not what we’re looking for. It was better in some areas but still JV in too many others.”

The evaluation continues this weekend. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. EDT.
