Logan Thomas is back with the San Francisco 49ers, just two weeks after being released by the team. The veteran tight end, known for his remarkable transition from quarterback to tight end, re-signed with the 49ers after they were unable to secure Brock Wright from the Detroit Lions during restricted free agency.

Thomas’s journey in the NFL has been unique. Originally drafted as a quarterback by the Arizona Cardinals in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft, Thomas started his professional career under center. In his rookie season, he appeared in two games, completing one-of-nine passes for 81 yards and a touchdown.

Despite this, his time as a quarterback was short-lived. After not appearing in any games for three seasons, Thomas transitioned to tight end with the Buffalo Bills, eventually finding his stride at the position.

It was during his 2019 season with the Detroit Lions that Thomas began to emerge as a reliable tight end. Standing at 6-foot-6, Thomas caught 16 passes for 173 yards and one touchdown with the Lions, a performance that set the stage for his successful four-year stint with the Washington Commanders.

Last season, despite Washington’s revolving door of quarterbacks, Thomas managed 55 receptions for 496 yards and four touchdowns, further proving his worth as a consistent and versatile player.

Back with the 49ers, Thomas brings valuable experience and depth to a tight end group that has been in flux. San Francisco’s attempt to sign Brock Wright, who remains with the Lions, fell through, making Thomas’s return even more significant.

The 49ers had initially signed Thomas earlier this year, but released him as they continued to explore other options, including Wright. However, with Wright staying in Detroit, the 49ers turned back to Thomas to fill the void.

The Lions, meanwhile, are confident in their tight end room, led by promising second-year player Sam LaPorta. Wright, who the 49ers had targeted, remains a key piece of Detroit’s offense, while Shane Zylstra, back from injury, and others like James Mitchell, Parker Hesse, and Sean McKeon continue to battle for roster spots.

For the 49ers, the decision to bring Thomas back underscores the importance of having a seasoned veteran in the mix, especially one who is already familiar with the team’s system.

Thomas’s versatility and proven ability to perform under pressure could be crucial as the 49ers prepare for the regular season. His presence adds competition and depth, which is essential for a team with playoff aspirations.

As the 49ers move through the preseason, all eyes will be on how Thomas fits into the tight end rotation. His experience and performance will be key factors in the team’s offensive strategy, and his ability to adapt quickly could make him a vital contributor when the regular season kicks off.
