When the Raiders recently signed Nathan Peterman , it was a move that didn't make a lot of sense other than familiarity with the Luke Getsy system.

Peterman's time in the NFL hasn't exactly gone as he would've planned as he enters his seventh season he's yet to throw for 1,000 total career yards. In fact here's where he stands up to this point in his career, 712 passing yards, 4 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions according to ESPN .

Now, he's being named as a player to cut on the Raiders roster. You can't even say he's been there for a cup of coffee yet he was signed on Aug. 13, so the coffee is probably still brewing. Nevertheless, some people believe he should not make it past cut down day to get to the 53-man roster.

"Las Vegas should release him [Peterman] as a procedural move to open a roster spot in case an intriguing waiver possibility pops up. Peterman can be stashed on the practice squad, not an active roster." said David Kenyon with Bleacher Report .

The major pushback against Kenyon's point could be that if you looked at the NFL last year it was important to keep at least three quarterbacks on your roster. Teams like the Vikings were stuck trying to find a viable backup until Josh Dobbs showed up and balled out.

However, having Peterman on the practice squad means you'll always have him on the back burner ready to go, and as aforementioned he's familiar with the Getsy system. Having the background knowledge of the terminology alone is a huge advantage, even if his play in the NFL hasn't been great.

Moving Peterman off the active roster come week 1 to the practice squad makes since especially if the team has high hopes for new arrivals like linebacker Dashaun White . That extra roster spot that cutting Peterman would provide will become very valuable.
