The Tampa Bay Buccaneers ended the exhibition portion of their 2024 schedule with a 24-14 win over the Miami Dolphins at Raymond James Stadium on Friday night.
Miami scored a touchdown late in the first half on a 20-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Skylar Thompson to wideout Hayden Rucci just before the two-minute warning.
Tampa Bay outgained the Dolphins 198-138 in the first half, and both teams were 1-for-6 on third downs at one point.
It took the entire third quarter for points by either team, as the Dolphins narrowed the score to 17-14 on a Thompson one-yard touchdown pass to receiver Kyric McGowan with 1:13 left in the period. The scoring play capped an 11-play, 86-yard drive that took 7:47 off the clock.
The Bucs were down to second- and third-string defensive players, but Miami's Thompson went 15-for-18 for 149 yards and two touchdowns by the start of the fourth quarter.
Tampa Bay extended its lead to 24-14 early in the fourth quarter on a two-yard touchdown pass from Trask to wideout Tanner Knue capping off a nine-play, 70-yard drive that took 4:22 off the clock.
The game saw its first turnover when Miami's quarterback Skylar Thompson was picked off across the middle on a nice play by Bucs linebacker Antonio Grier Jr. at midfield just before the two-minute warning.
The Bucs ran the ball the rest of the way to run out the clock for their first preseason win this year.
Kyle Trask looked improved, completing 17-of-24 passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns - but maybe more importantly, no interceptions or turnovers.
The Bucs' defense also held in "bend but don't break" fashion allowing 320 total yards but just 14 points.
