Bucs' Backfield Depth Apparent in Preseason Finale Win vs. Dolphins

Through two preseason games, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had demonstrated considerable growth in the running game. All those reps came with the second-team guys on the field with the starters sitting both contests.

Friday, the first-team group saw the field for the first team in the 2024 campaign. It took one drive to realize the ground game turnaround was no accident.

Instead, Tampa Bay appears primed for a complete turnaround in that phase of the offense under Liam Coen. Rachaad White had a small sample size in the first quarter, but the four yards-per-carry carried over on the tape.

White's ability as a runner stood out, but the Bucs' offensive line executed its assignments and created holes for the running back. White danced untouched into the end zone when he scored his four-yard touchdown.

As impressive as that drive was, the starters would not see the field again. Instead of a regression, the backfield reserves entered the game and picked up where White left off.

Bucky Irving carried on his efficient play with six carries for 26 yards. Sean Tucker turned in seven carries for 20 yards along with a 27-yard reception that set up the Bucs' third option.

Again, the offensive line's performance plays a part in that success. But the feel of this backfield is undeniably changed.

When the regular season rolls around in two weeks, the action seen between Irving and Tucker will likely diminish. However, they remain two functioning pieces that can contribute when their number is called.

Altogether, the overall performances of the Tampa Bay running backs solidified the belief that this group can spearhead a vastly improved ground attack. Instead of a hindrance or something the offense will have to force, the Bucs running game seems it can play a critical role in elevating this offense.
