Just ahead of the very first slate of college football games on Week 0 Saturday, ESPN's Greg McElroy issued his official pick for the national championship in January.

As part of a segment that aired ahead of the first 2024 edition of ESPN's "College GameDay," Sam Acho and McElroy agreed on their national championship selection. Acho went first taking Ohio State, and McElroy followed suit.

"I'm also taking Ohio State," McElroy said. "I think a lot of it has to do with the addition of Chip Kelly as their offensive coordinator. I think they're going to run the football. That's what Kelly does. They have two unbelievable running backs and an elite wide receiver."

With a steady veteran at QB and a tenacious defense mostly coming back, McElroy loves the shape the Buckeyes are in.

"I think Will Howard will be solid and they have a defense that can go with anybody at all three levels," he added. "So I'm very, very bullish on Ohio State. I think they have the best roster."

Ohio State certainly met that criteria in ESPN's ranking of the top 100 players in college football, where OSU led the way by far with eight total guys who landed on the list. The talent is there, and now, it's time for the results to match from Ryan Day.
