The Boston Red Sox (67-60) currently find themselves on the outside looking in at the playoffs. With 35 games remaining, they sit eight games back of the division lead, and 3.5 games back of a Wild Card spot.

35 games is more than enough time to claim a Wild Card spot, while the divisional title may be out of the question. And the Red Sox may have some key pieces of their roster returning from injury just in time.

    Day-to-Day

    OF Tyler O'Neill

O'Neill (left fourth finger inflammation) was scratched from the lineup ahead of Friday's game. No further word has been given on O'Neill's status at this time.

O'Neill was activated from the 10-day injured list on August 17th. Should he hit the injured list again, it will be his fourth stint this season.

    10/15-Day Injured List

    RHP Justin Slaten

Slaten (5-2, 3.38 ERA; right elbow inflammation) made his first rehab appearance on Friday. He threw 17 pitches, eight of them being strikes. The Red Sox have not stated whether or not Slaten will get another rehab appearance or be activated from the injured list. He is expected to return before the end of August.

    60-Day Injured List

    SS Trevor Story

Story (dislocated left shoulder) will start a rehab assignment in less than two weeks. It is now a real possibility that he can return before the end of the season.

    LHP James Paxton

Paxton (9-3, 4.40 ERA; partially torn right calf) was transferred to the 60-day injured list on Friday. It is now official that he will not be returning during the regular season, though Manager Alex Cora said that Paxton could be available in time for the American League Championship Series if Boston makes it that far.

    RHP Liam Hendriks

Hendriks (right UCL Surgery) made his second rehab appearance on Thursday. Cora said that Hendriks "feels good. He feels OK." The club is debating on if his next rehab appearance will come on August 25th or 27th. Hendriks is expected to return in September.
