Texas fans who tuned in to watch their future quarterback on Friday night had to be thrilled. KJ Lacey threw for 317 yards and four touchdowns in a 35-27 win for Saraland in a massive season-opening win over Jackson.

A four-star recruit out of Saraland, Alabama, Lacey led the Spartans to a 14-1 record last season and an Alabama 6A runner-up finish. In his junior campaign, he completed 219 of 315 passes for 3,448 yards and 42 touchdowns to eight interceptions.

Lacey committed to the Longhorns on June 3, and he's had an excellent summer, including a fifth-place finish at Elite 11.

“I don’t think there’s a better place to be in the country than Texas right now,” Lacey said earlier this summer. “When you go there you feel like a home, (there are) family vibes. On top of that, it’s not just what they show you there but what you can be when you get there. They’ll develop you to be the best.”

Lacey is one of the top recruits in a Texas class that currently ranks 12th in the 2025 cycle. With Arch Manning waiting in the wings and top recruit Dia Bell joining in 2026, the Longhorns continue to build an excellent pipeline of quarterback talent.
