The college football season began with a bang as the No. 10 ranked Florida State Seminoles suffered an upset at the hands of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

The Yellow Jackets secured a 24-21 victory with a walk-off 44-yard field goal by Aidan Birr. Quarterback Haynes King played a key role in the upset. Although his stats were not exceptional, completing 11 out of 16 passes for 146 yards and running the ball 15 times for 54 yards, he consistently made crucial plays when needed.

During the final drive of the game, the Yellow Jackets faced a 3rd and 7 in their own territory. King connected with Jamal Haynes for a 16-yard gain, securing a first down and extending the drive. This prevented the Seminoles' offense, which had just tied the game on their previous drive, from getting another possession. The Yellow Jackets ultimately sealed the game with a game-winning field goal.

King also joined some elite company after pulling off the upset. ESPN's Pete Thamel tweeted that King joined NFL Hall of Famer Brett Favre as the only other quarterback to upset a top 10 Florida State team as an unranked team in a season opener.

"Florida State was 17-1 in season openers as a Top-10 team against unranked opponents, with the lone loss coming in 1989 against Southern Miss," Thamel announced. "Haynes King joins Brett Favre in pulling the rare upset."

The Southern Mississippi team won the game 30-26. However, this loss did not prevent the Seminoles from having a great season. Starting as preseason No. 6, Florida State lost the following week to the Clemson Tigers but then went on to win 10 straight games, ending the season with a 10-2 record and ranked No. 3.

Southern Mississippi finished the year with a 5-6 record. Florida State fans hope their team can rally like the 1989 team did, while Yellow Jacket fans hope to finish the season much better than Favre and Southern Mississippi did.
