FIG President’s Apology Falls Flat as Jordan Chiles’ Mother Slams Statement
By Richard Pereira,

The controversy surrounding Jordan Chiles' Olympic bronze medal has sparked intense reactions, particularly from Chiles' mother, Gina.
Gina Chiles recently criticized the International Gymanstics Federation and its president, Morinari Watanabe, for their handling of the situation.
Chiles, who initially claimed an Olympic bronze medal, was later stripped of the medal following a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The Romanian Olympic Committee challenged the timing of Chiles' appeal, leading to a lengthy process that ultimately resulted in the medal being awarded to Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu on Aug. 16.
Watanabe issued a statement on Aug. 24 addressing the incident, which he referred to as a "tragedy." He emphasized the importance of technology in sports judging.
"This tragedy must never happen again. Since I became FIG president, I have been promoting the use of technology in judging," he said.
However, his comments did not sit well with Chiles' mother, who took to social media to express her frustration.
Her response on X (formerly Twitter) was sharp and direct.
"This statement is a tragedy. ChatGPT would have done you wonders here 🤦🏽♀️," she said.
Her reaction highlighted her disappointment not only with the outcome but also with the way FIG communicated their stance. Watanabe's attempt to address the issue seemed to miss the mark for many, especially those close to Chiles.
Watanabe continued his statement by expressing regret over the organization's loss of its pioneering status in utilizing technology for fair judgements.
"The use of technology in sport is now taken for granted and the FIG used to be at the forefront of introducing federations. But now we are no longer a pioneer. This is because we are not able to break our own prejudices because of our traditions," Watanabe said. He suggested that these outdated practices may have contributed to the mishap in Paris.
Gina criticized Watanabe's focus on technology rather than the personal impact of the decision.
"Way to use the devastation this caused as a pitch for new tech," she said.
Her comments reflected a deep dissatisfaction with the FIG's handling of the situation, particularly the lack of direct acknowledgement of Chiles' loss in Watanabe's statement.
Watanabe concluded his statement by calling for change within the organization to prevent similar incidents in the future.
"What can we do to prevent the same tragedy from happening again? It is up to us to have the courage to change." Yet, the omission of any mention of Chiles further fueled Gina's anger, ending the post, "Respectfully READ THE ROOM sir."
Gina Chiles was not alone in her criticism. Many fans and commentators echoed her sentients, expressing disappointment in how the FIG managed the controversy and how it affected the athletes involved.
As the dust settles, it's clear that the fallout from this decision will linger, leaving many to question the integrity of the process and the treatment of athletes like Jordan Chiles.
This entire process has been ridiculous. They couldn't get her score right but tried to accurately state that the coach had filled the appeal late which was shown to be incorrect. Jordan C should keep here medal and an investigation needs to go forward. How very insensitive for him not to address the situation instead of talking about technology. They all need to be replaced
