Worth It? Mock Trade Sends Stephen Curry to San Antonio Spurs

Despite having Stephen Curry on the roster, it's pretty clear that the Golden State Warriors will not be competing for the NBA Finals this season. After losing in the Play-In Tournament, the Warriors might be able to make the playoffs, but will likely be stuck behind the best teams in the Western Conference.

That could mean the end of the Curry era in the Bay Area, and teams around the league would do almost anything to add the greatest shooter in NBA history. The San Antonio Spurs, with their seemingly limitless arsenal of draft picks, could do what it takes to add Curry, but would it be worth it?

For starters, a duo of Victor Wembanyama and Stephen Curry would be one of the most terrifying offenses the NBA has ever seen. Wembanyama finished last season as a top-15 player who needed to be guarded everywhere on the court. Curry, on the other hand, is easily the best shooter in the league, and having one of the most dominating interior players and perimeter players on the same team would rocket the Spurs into contention.

Of course, Curry, who is under contract for the next two seasons and is showing no signs of slowing down, would see the Warriors get perhaps the biggest return in league history if they were to trade him. In a recently proposed trade by Blue Man Hoop, the Spurs break the bank for Curry.

If the Warriors flip Curry, they will only do so for a very future-driven package that will propel their inevitable rebuild, which looks to be centered around Jonathan Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski. Adding Castle, the fourth overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, would certainly do the trick, and they would get three additional picks they could use.

The upcoming pick from the Atlanta Hawks is perhaps San Antonio's best asset, as Atlanta will likely be bad and the draft class in 2025 is reportedly one of the best ever. That alone should give the Spurs pause.

However, Curry is coming off a season where he averaged 26.4 points, 5.1 assists, and shot over 40 percent from deep for the 13th time in his career. During the Paris Olympics, he proved he is still an elite player. The Spurs would become one of the favorites to win the Finals by adding Curry.

That said, any deal for Curry, however tantalizing, would ravage their future. The Spurs would have to give up the entire farm for an all-in shot to win in the next two seasons. While it would be reasonable to assume the Spurs could at least make one NBA Finals provided Curry stays healthy, how many could they win if they stay the course? Likely several, as Wembanyama is expected to anchor the next dynasty.
