Jacob Cowing continues to impress as a rookie wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers , showcasing his skills in the preseason finale against the Las Vegas Raiders. In a game that ended in a 24-24 tie, Cowing caught all three of his targets, totaling 39 yards and scoring a touchdown. He also contributed on special teams, returning three punts for 19 yards, averaging 6.3 yards per return.

“Just continuing to play my game,” Cowing said after the game via NBC Sports . “Being confident in my abilities each and every game, each and every practice I’m going into. Just being present in the moment, too. Not trying to think too far ahead.”

Cowing's performance comes after a strong showing in the previous preseason game, where he aimed to prove that his success was no fluke. He emphasized the importance of staying focused and confident in his abilities as he prepares for the upcoming season.

“Just spending those moments with the guys in preseason,” Cowing said. “Cherishing the moments, and all the hard work that we put into this thing. Seeing people smile, that was just my mindset going into the preseason. Be in the moment, be where my feet are and just have fun playing ball.”

As the 49ers approach the deadline for roster cuts, Cowing is aware of the competitive nature of the team. He values the camaraderie built during the preseason and is determined to make the most of his opportunities on the field.

The highlight of his night was a touchdown reception at the end of the third quarter, where he found space in the end zone and connected with quarterback Josh Dobbs. Cowing's understanding of defensive positioning played a key role in his success on that play.

“I saw the corner, he was outside leverage, and I’m like this is the perfect look,” Cowing said. “I got to go get on his toes, make him move and see if I can’t the ball in my hands and get a touchdown and that’s what worked out and happened in that moment and I’m super grateful for that time.”

Despite missing some training camp time due to a hamstring injury, Cowing is making strides in his development. He logged 29 offensive snaps, accounting for 39 percent of the plays, and is focused on improving his grasp of the playbook and building chemistry with his teammates.

The rookie's progress has not gone unnoticed by the coaching staff, who are optimistic about his potential as the team prepares for the regular season. Cowing is committed to making steady improvements and is eager to contribute to the 49ers' success moving forward.

“He has done a good job,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said the week before the game. “He’s improved each day. Hopefully, he’ll get a lot of playing time in the game and be able to get through and get that experience and keep stacking those days up.”

“There’s still a lot of growth for me to get within the playbook,” Cowing said. “But definitely making small steps each and every practice for me to get more comfortable, and more comfortable with the quarterback too. Still going in the right direction.”
