Did Trey Lance Blow His QB2 Chance vs. Chargers?

    By Adam Schultz,

    2024-08-25

The Dallas Cowboys' 26-19 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers at AT&T Stadium in their final preseason game will be remembered for one thing - Trey Lance's five interceptions.

In what was Lance's last chance to show he deserves serious consideration to backup Dak Prescott in 2024, Lance showed the good and bad parts of his game.

Of his five interceptions, four were "his" fault, with one pass to Cam Johnson where the Chargers defender simply wanted it more as he bullied the receivers.

But interceptions are a quarterback stat, and next to Lance's name, it reads five.

While the interceptions were a clear blight on the game, we also saw the good from Lance at AT&T Stadium, with his 46-yard touchdown run a highlight.

Lance again looked confident in Mike McCarthy's offense with quarterbacks coach Scott Tolzien calling the shots. At times, Lance was decisive in his throws, and one could argue that he had his best "NFL caliber" throw was to tight end John Stephens Jr. for a big gain before the tight end fumbled and the Chargers took over.

Then there was his dime for rookie receiver Ryan Flournoy for another touchdown grab as the pair have developed quite the chemistry this offseason.

Trey would finish his night by completing 33 of his 49 passes for 323 yards, one touchdown, and those five damn interceptions.

Saturday night's game showed us one thing, and the Cowboys' decision regarding the backup quarterback role will be interesting. Lance can make plays that Rush simply can't. But Lance makes costly decisions with the football that Rush doesn't.

While we have seen the best of Lance at stages, we have now seen his absolute worst, and given that, barring an injury to Dak in the regular season, Lance won't see another live NFL snap for a year.

This begs the question: Have the Cowboys seen enough from Lance to be confident about keeping him on the roster?

Jerry Jones stated earlier in the week that Lance will be on the final 53 roster, but after his performance against the Chargers, in which many had hoped to have more answers than questions, we aren't entirely sure.

As was the case before Dallas' preseason game, we still don't know where Lance sits in the pecking order.

And that, my friends, is a problem.
