Randy Vasquez is struggling to make a case for his return to the MLB as he remains winless in the minor leagues this season.

In his latest outing with Triple-A El Paso, Vasquez faced Triple-A Oklahoma City, allowing six hits and four earned runs over four innings, bringing his record to 0-5.

This season, Vasquez has surrendered 26 earned runs in 26.2 innings, resulting in an 8.78 ERA and 27 strikeouts across five starts.

The 25-year-old made his MLB debut with the San Diego Padres on April 20 against the Toronto Blue Jays, stepping up in the rotation during a challenging time when both Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove were sidelined due to injuries.

Vasquez's time in the majors has been inconsistent. He has had outings where he allowed one earned run or fewer, but he also has games where he gave up five or six runs.

In his last three starts with the Padres, he pitched 12.2 innings, giving up 13 hits and 10 earned runs while striking out 10 batters.

Overall, Vasquez finished the season with a 3-6 record, a 4.63 ERA, and 53 strikeouts in 17 major league starts.

With Darvish still out and Matt Waldron recently optioned to Triple-A, the Padres are in need of a reliable starter. However, Vasquez's current performance suggests he may need more time in the minors before rejoining the big league roster.

Before joining the Padres, Vasquez was part of the New York Yankees organization, signing as an international free agent in 2018.

He made his Triple-A debut in 2023, where he recorded a 2-7 record with a 3.90 ERA across 25 starts.

Last season, he went 2-2 with a 2.87 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 11 games for the Yankees before being traded to the Padres as part of a deal involving several players, including Juan Soto and Trent Grisham.
