The Los Angeles Lakers are eyeing Luka Doncic as a potential future star for their franchise. Following LeBron James' recent two-year contract extension, speculation is already swirling about who the Lakers might pursue next.

Doncic, who led the Dallas Mavericks to the NBA Finals last season, has two years left on his current contract, along with a player option.

Reports indicate that he is content in Dallas, especially with the team's promising outlook for the future. The Mavericks have built a strong supporting cast around him, making them competitive in the Western Conference.

Despite this, the Lakers remain interested. They have not traded away their future draft picks, signaling a long-term strategy rather than an immediate push for a championship.

This approach suggests they are preparing for a significant move when the right opportunity arises.

The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor said during a recent episode of his podcast “The Mismatch.”

“I’ve reported on this podcast and on The Ringer how [the Lakers] have their sights set for Luka. We’ll see if that works out. Dallas just made a Finals, Dallas is looking better than ever with their supporting cast.

"That may not work out, but the Lakers by not trading their future picks clearly are still thinking long-term at this point. They’re not going all in like you might expect many teams to do with James.”

The Lakers are not just focused on Doncic; they are monitoring several star players across the league. The NBA landscape is always shifting, and the Lakers want to be ready to capitalize if a superstar becomes available.

When LeBron eventually retires, the Lakers plan for Anthony Davis to take over as the franchise's cornerstone. However, Davis needs a playmaker to complement his game, a role LeBron has filled. Finding the right player to pair with him will be crucial.

As the Lakers hold onto their draft picks, they are waiting for the right moment to make a move. With LeBron approaching 40, the urgency to act is increasing. Fans are eager to see how this strategy unfolds in the coming seasons.
