Gore Jr. Shares Touching Moment with Dad

    By Mike Fisher,

In the immortal words of The Godfather’s Michael Corleone, “If I ever need help, who is a better consigliere than my father?”

For new Buffalo Bills running back Frank Gore, Jr., the wisdom and counsel of his legendary father Frank Sr. is expected to serve him well as he settles into his new home in western New York.

In turn, the 16-year veteran — who many consider a future Pro Football Hall of Fame running back — is not only quite proud of his son, but also excited about his son’s standout performance in Buffalo’s 31-26 loss to the Carolina Panthers at Highmark Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Gore Jr., put his dual-threat skill set on display while making a solid argument for earning a spot on the team’s 53-man roster. Gore compiled 101 rushing yards on 18 carries and one touchdown.

Despite the loss, father and son shared a proud and poignant postgame moment.

Gore Jr. was an effective, physical runner for the Southern Miss Golden Eagles since joining them in 2020. The 5-8, 200-pound back had his most productive year in 2022 when averaging 6.1 yards per carry for 1,382 yards and nine touchdowns — a season for which he earned first team All Sun Belt honors. Last season, he averaged 4.9 yards per carry for 1,131 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also notched 27 receptions for 221 yards and three scoring receptions. He was also named offensive MVP of February’s East-West Shrine Bowl.

Though Gore may be smaller than the average pro running back, his toughness, combined with above average instincts, is expected to make him an effective rusher in situational packages, as well as a solid backfield receiver. He may also serve as a quarterback in gadget play situations — as evidenced in a 2021 victory over Louisiana Tech, in which he threw two touchdowns.

Ultimately, Gore Sr’s endorsement of his sone should be give greater consideration than that of simply a proud parent. The five time Pro Bowler was considered one of the most productive and durable running backs of his generation. He also knows Buffalo quite well having played for the Bills in 2019. Gore Sr. finished the season with 166 carries for 599 yards and two touchdowns to go along with 13 receptions for 100 yards in 16 games and eight starts.

While it is far too early to expect similar production from father to son, Gore Jr. has the pedigree to make a difference in Buffalo’s backfield.
