The Los Angeles Dodgers have made a significant roster move by designating veteran outfielder Jason Heyward for assignment.

This decision comes as the team prepares to welcome back Chris Taylor from the injured list, following his recovery from a groin strain.

Heyward's designation follows a strong performance in which he hit a three-run homer during the Dodgers' recent victory over the Seattle Mariners.

Heyward's departure has left a noticeable impact on his teammates, as he had become a well-respected figure in the clubhouse. His professionalism and dedication to the team were evident throughout his time with the Dodgers.

“Everybody is obviously sad to see him go,” Taylor said of Heyward, via Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times .

“He’s a real pro and definitely one of the best teammates I’ve ever had. I’m proud to call him a teammate, and I learned a lot from him just by watching him go about his business every day. He truly put the team ahead of himself at all times.”

With key players like Max Muncy, Freddie Freeman, and Mookie Betts returning to the lineup, along with the addition of Kevin Kiermaier, the Dodgers faced a roster crunch that ultimately led to this tough decision.

“It was a very difficult decision, but we had a roster crunch. Guys finally came back to health, and we only have so much room.” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said.

The team opted not to wait until September 1, when they could have expanded their roster, choosing instead to act quickly.

Heyward joined the Dodgers in December 2022 on a minor league contract and made the Opening Day roster the following spring.

In his first season, he posted a solid .269 batting average with 15 home runs and 40 RBIs, earning the Roy Campanella Award for his inspirational presence.

This year, he struggled somewhat, hitting .208 with six home runs and 28 RBIs over 63 games, but he played a crucial role in keeping the team competitive during injury setbacks.

The decision to part ways with Heyward reflects the Dodgers' current roster dynamics and their commitment to fielding the strongest team possible as they push toward the postseason.
