Paul Spicer had a 12-year career in the NFL, during which he was a member of the Jacksonville team from 2000 to 2008. During the 2011-12 season, he served as the assistant defensive line coach for the Jaguars. Most recently, he held the position of defensive line coach for the San Antonio Brahmas in the XFL.

It was an honor to discuss this season’s Jaguars and catch up with a Duval legend, Paul Spicer.

Craig: Let's start with your specialty, the defensive line. What are you seeing from that group?

Paul: Well, last year they underachieved. That compounded their defensive woes. Davon Hamilton developed that spinal abscess which didn't help things with that illness. It always starts up front. When the front line doesn't play well, it's a domino effect. Josh Allen had a great season individually with stats, but it wasn't a great team effort on defense. They have to learn how to play together and how to stop the run consistently. Talent gets you to halftime, but technique wins the game (laughs). They need the foundation of technique and fundamentals every down.

Craig: What is the ceiling for Josh Hines-Allen?

Paul: I think Josh is the only person who knows what his ceiling truly is. I think his talent is off the charts. He'll put in the work. I've seen that personally even before practice starts, he'll be putting in extra work. The true test for him is if he can galvanize this group and take them to the next level.

Craig: You played 115 games over your 9 seasons with the Jaguars. That first career sack in the OT win vs Dallas at Texas Stadium in 2000. Was that in the top five of all time personal highlights for you?

Paul: It's in the top five no doubt. That was first career sack. I worked my tail off after getting cut by the Lions and to get the opportunity with Jacksonville and to play with guys like Tony Brackens. That day really catapulted my career. I was so grateful for all of those guys around me.

Craig: You talk about gratitude, how amazing was it to come back for a day and retire as a Jaguar?

Paul: The fans, the people, the city were so amazing. Living it every day was just incredible. It meant everything. They have such a special place in my heart. I had to retire as a Jaguar. There was no other way. I owe so much to the organization for believing in me.
