The Los Angeles Lakers are at a crossroads as they look to improve their roster for the upcoming season.

With only a couple of new faces joining the team, including rookie guards Dalton Knecht and Bronny James, the Lakers need to make a significant move to enhance their competitiveness.

After finishing last season with a 47-35 record and an early exit from the playoffs, the Lakers owe it to their star players, Anthony Davis and LeBron James, to give them a better chance at a deep playoff run.

Two names stand out in trade discussions: Brandon Ingram of the New Orleans Pelicans and Jerami Grant, currently with the Portland Trail Blazers.

Ingram, a former Laker, is known for his scoring ability but has defensive weaknesses that could be a concern for Los Angeles.

Last season, he averaged 20.8 points, 5.7 assists, and 5.1 rebounds, showcasing his offensive talent. However, his return to the Lakers might be complicated, given his past with the team.

Brian Windhorst of ESPN recently explained that Ingram wanted a contract extension that would compensate him in the neighborhood of $200 million (he's eligible for a four-year deal worth up to $208 million), but the Pelicans blanched at that figure. The two sides are still hopeful to work out a new deal this offseason.

On the other hand, Grant presents a more balanced option. He can score and is also effective defensively, making him a better fit for the Lakers' needs.

Last season, he averaged 21.0 points while shooting 40.2% from three-point range, which could help spread the floor for the Lakers.

While both players could elevate the team's performance, Grant appears to be the more sensible choice. However, the Lakers may hesitate to part with both of their future first-round draft picks, which could complicate any potential deal.

As the Lakers weigh their options, the decision to pursue either Ingram or Grant could define their season and impact their chances of success in the competitive Western Conference.
