Deion Sanders Didn’t Hesitate When Naming the Type of Coach He Refuses to Hire

Colorado head coach Deion Sanders pulled off the ultimate surprise and fantastic gesture for members of his team, as seen on social media on Sunday, August 25.

The head coach helped curate a partnership with a local bank that was willing to open accounts for the children of a handful of his players while also depositing $2,121 to start them off. In explaining to his players just how important and special it is to be a father, Sanders also revealed that, in a way, he determines who he hires based on what kind of father they are.

While talking to his players about their roles as fathers, Sanders expressed that he would never hire a "deadbeat" father to be a part of his staff.

"So y'all know how I am about fathering," Sanders said while teasing the surprise. "And you know I would not hire a coach unless he's a great father. I don't hire a coach as a deadbeat. I don't hire coaches not taking care of his responsibilities. I would never hire a man that he say he's gonna look after y'all but he won't look after his. That don't make sense to me."

Sanders had quite a handful of fatherly relationships to evaluate this offseason if that's the case. In total, Sanders returns just two on-field staffers who are in the same roles they had in 2023.

While the fatherhood aspect of his hiring process is new information, we did know that he values NFL experience.

Offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, defensive coordinator Robert Livingston, offensive line coach Phil Loadholt, Senior Quality Control Analyst Warren Sapp and corner coach Kevin Mathis, among others, have all played or coached in the NFL during their careers.

We will see Sanders' almost entirely new staff for the first time on Thursday, as they open their season with FCS power North Dakota State.
