Former Rangers Forward Could Solve Reported Maple Leafs Need

The Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly showing interest in veteran forward Blake Wheeler, who remains unsigned as the NHL preseason approaches.

According to Shawn Hutcheon of The Fourth Period , the Boston Bruins could potentially offer Wheeler a professional tryout (PTO) deal. This, however, might indicate a potential approach from the Toronto Maple Leafs on top of Boston.

"A source close to the situation has told me the #NHLBruins are considering extending PTO (Professional Tryout) offer to forward Blake Wheeler," Hutcheon wrote.

What makes this report more interesting is that it predated Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman's latest 32 Thoughts column published on August 24 reporting the Leafs' interest in adding another winger to their roster before next season.

"I think there are things percolating out there, including Toronto considering left-wing options," Friedman wrote.

Wheeler, a 16-year NHL veteran, has been a consistent presence in the league since being drafted in the first round by the Phoenix Coyotes in 2004.

At 37, Wheeler's best years are likely behind him, but his experience and leadership could be valuable to a team like the Maple Leafs, who are looking to add depth as they prepare for the upcoming season.

Last season, Wheeler played 54 games with the New York Rangers, recording 21 points. Although that was a solid regular-season production, Wheeler only appeared in one postseason game with the Rangers without scoring any points.

If Friedman's information is correct, however, Wheeler would need to move from his usual deployment on the right wing to the left side of the rink to fit the left-wing need in Toronto.
