Should Steelers Sign Veteran Free Agent WR?

As the Pittsburgh Steelers work to finalize their roster ahead of the NFL's August 27 deadline, an intriguing suggestion has emerged from NFL analysts: the team should consider adding veteran wide receiver Robert Woods if he becomes available. With the Steelers already exploring options to enhance their wide receiver room, the potential release of Woods by the Houston Texans presents an opportunity for Pittsburgh to secure a seasoned presence.

Robert Woods: Flex Rankings Week 11

Currently, the Steelers’ wide receiver group is led by George Pickens , with players like Van Jefferson , Calvin Austin , Roman Wilson , Scotty Miller , and Dez Fitzpatrick vying for spots on the final 53-man roster. However, depth and experience behind Pickens remain concerns, particularly as the team has been linked to San Francisco 49ers’ receiver Brandon Aiyuk . If the Steelers are unable to land Aiyuk, they may need to look elsewhere for reinforcement.

Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine highlighted Robert Woods as a viable option for the Steelers.

“The Steelers and Commanders spring to mind. Both have been connected to Brandon Aiyuk this preseason. While Woods is no Aiyuk, he would give both teams a reliable veteran presence that neither of the teams really have,” Ballentine noted.

He also suggested that Woods could complement Pickens and Jefferson, providing the Steelers with much-needed veteran leadership in their receiving corps.

Woods, who registered 40 receptions for 426 yards and one touchdown over 14 games last season, may no longer be the dynamic playmaker he once was. However, at 32 years old, his experience and consistency could still offer value to a Steelers team aiming to solidify its offense. Should the Texans release Woods, he would become an immediate free agent, giving Pittsburgh the chance to make a strategic addition.

As roster cuts draw near, it's unlikely the Steelers will make a move for Woods, but the Steelers’ front office will need to evaluate all available options. While Woods may not drastically alter the trajectory of their season, his potential contribution as a reliable veteran could be something Pittsburgh needs as they gear up for the 2024 campaign.
