FRISCO - It was going to be a cut. It just got changed into a trade. What happened?
We entered into the final weekend of the NFL preseason with Dallas Cowboys questions. Now ... it's time for 53 answers. ... and $100 million guaranteed for CeeDee Lamb, all happening at the same time.
We will provide those answers as they happen, live from the Star in Frisco, with the NFL's official cutdown day and time of Tuesday, Aug. 28, as all 32 teams must trim their roster from 90 to 53 players by 3 p.m. CT.
There will be cuts and re-calls and practice-squad adds and ... maybe Cowboys trades? Lock in and check in often ...
AUG 28 CLAIMED The Cowboys had two DBs claimed on waivers, as Eric Scott goes to Kansas City and Julius Wood goes to Tennessee.
The Cowboys were not awarded any players on waivers as a result of cutdown day.
Meanwhile, WR Jalen Cropper is coming back to Dallas via the practice squad, as is OT Josh Ball, as they'll join Dalvin Cook there ... with more to come.
AUG 27 TE OUT The Cowboys believe they have a loaded tight ends room and they may have just proven that as they were waiving TE Peyton Hendershot …. That is, until the Chiefs called.
Kansas City intercepted the Cowboys move and helps out Dallas. Hendershot is being traded to Travis Kelce’s Chiefs in exchange for a late-round conditional pick,
The pic may end up being nothing… But it beats cutting a solid NFL player.
Hendershot has served as a helpful backup to Jake Ferguson as he played in 25 games over the past two seasons.
AUG 27 NFL CUTS Among the notable ex-Cowboys who have been released as we approach the Tuesday afternoon deadline: Kelvin Joseph, the former Dallas second-round cornerback, who's been released by the Chiefs, and Will Grier, the "folk hero'' QB from last preseason in Dallas, who made a strong bid for a roster spot just before the team traded for Trey Lance.
AUG 26 CEEDEE IN, 15 OUT The Cowboys so-far roster cuts: CB Eric Scott, DE Viliami Fehoko, DE Durrell Johnson, WR Tyron Billy-Johnson, LB Willie Harvey, LB Damien Wilson, DT Albert Huggins, WR David Durden, WR Deontay Burnett, OL Cohl Cobral, DB Josh DeBerry, TE Alec Holler, WR Cam Johnson, LB Jason Johnson and RB Nathaniel Peat.
Dallas did all of that business on Monday in the noon hour while also finalizing the CeeDee Lamb deal, a four-year, $136 million extension featuring $100 million guaranteed.
AUG 26 TBJ GONE The Cowboys have released speedy receiver Tyron-Billy Johnson, as first reported by the DMN .
AUG 23 Coming into the process, before Saturday's game? Malik Davis seems like a keeper as the third running back. And Hunter Luepke sticks as a fullback. Is there room for Deuce Vaughn? ... Ryan Flournoy? How many receivers do they keep? (And yes, there is every reason to think they'll seal a deal with CeeDee "Call Me'' Lamb soon enough. ) ... Behind Jake Ferguson, there are lots of intriguing tight end bodies. Luke Schoonmaker gets a pass. They like John Stephens Jr. in. And then Spann-Ford? Fant? And Hendershot has no shot? ... Do they need a Waletzko or a Ball? Have either of them earned a job? Guyton of course has. If it's "knee soreness'' today? Don’t need to see him . Beebe? He opened camp as the third-string center. One more good Saturday of snapping and the job is his. ...
They will cut and re-call CJ Godwin and Trent Sieg. Can they do the same with Cooper Rush? ... There will be trades. Who wants one of Dallas' safeties? What can Dallas get in return? A starting running back? We bet not. ... And Trey Lance. The preseason was a showcase for him. Did he impress enough to get his roster spot? Or even to be seen as a real player around here?
