Miami Marlins Promoting Son of "Mr. Marlin"

The Miami Marlins (47-83) continue to promote prospects to The Show for the stretch run of the season. On Sunday, the club announced that they will be calling up Griffin Conine , son of "Mr. Marlin" Jeff Conine , to make his Major League debut.

Once Griffin makes his Major League debut, he and his father will become the second father-son duo to play for the Marlins, joining David and Ryan Weathers .

The Marlins acquired Griffin from the Toronto Blue Jays (63-68) on September 18th, 2020 as the Player to be Named Later in the Jonathan Villar trade. In his first season with the organization, Griffin belted 36 home runs between High-A and Double-A, the second most home runs in the minor leagues for that season.

Griffin is not listed on the Marlins' top-30 prospects list from MLB Pipeline but has had a nice season in Triple-A. Batting .268/.350/.475 with 41 extra-base hits and 68 RBI across 437 plate appearances in 112 games.

Griffin is scheduled to meet the club in Colorado, where it begins a seven-game road trip on Monday. He will get playing time this season, but he is not expected to play every day.

The corresponding move for Griffin's promotion is rumored to be shortstop Xavier Edwards being placed on the 10-day injured list. Edwards' MRI from Saturday returned negative, but the injured list stint will allow Edwards to rest his back and fully recover before returning to the field.

Griffin's dad Jeff Conine spent eight seasons with the Marlins, including being a part of both World Series teams. He was named an All-Star twice while with the Marlins and won a National League MVP award with the club in 1995. He ranks second in club history in games played with 1,014, behind Luis Castillo .
