The Kansas City Chiefs began shaking up their quarterback depth chart on Monday, one day ahead of the NFL's August 27 deadline to cut rosters down to 53 players.

As first reported by NFL Network's Tom Pelissero , the defending Super Bowl champions waived former Notre Dame starting quarterback Ian Book from the roster.

If he clears waivers, the 26-year-old will be eligible to sign with any NFL team, including a potential reunion on the Chiefs' practice squad.

Book, originally drafted in the fourth round by the New Orleans Saints in 2021, had been competing for backup snaps behind MVP starter Patrick Mahomes, former No. 2 overall pick Carson Wentz and third-year pro Chris Oladokun.

During his five year stint at Notre Dame between 2016-20, Book was the winningest quarterback in school history (30 wins) and a two-year team captain.

The 6-foot-1 California native appeared in 48 collegiate games, threw for 8,948 yards, 72 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. His best statistical season came as a senior in 2019 when he posted a career-best 3,034 passing yards and a 34-6 TD-to-INT ratio.

Book's lone NFL start came as a rookie in 2021, a 20-3 loss to the Miami Dolphins in Week 15. He completed 12-of-20 passes for 135 yards, two interceptions and was sacked a whopping eight times.
