The Los Angeles Lakers are facing scrutiny after selecting Bronny James in the 2024 NBA Draft, a move that pairs him with his father, LeBron James.

Critics are questioning the decision, pointing to Bronny's modest college stats, where he averaged just 4.8 points and 2.8 rebounds as a freshman.

Former NBA player John Salley has weighed in, suggesting that jealousy drives the negative commentary surrounding the pick.

He believes that if anyone else had the same opportunity to work alongside a family member with such a successful career, they would jump at the chance.

"I love that Bronny got drafted to the Lakers," said Salley, a four-time champion across his pro career, to TMZ Sports . "And everybody talking all that smack, hey listen, if my dad had the power, if my dad was the leading scorer, if my dad was able to take a pay cut so I could get a check — it's like no other business."

He added that the detractors are "just mad they didn't think they could do it."

Rich Paul, the agent for both LeBron and Bronny, told Chris Haynes for Bleacher Report in May that the United States is "built on the nepotism," citing multiple examples at the executive level across sports.

However, the dynamics of professional sports often amplify these discussions, especially when a player is drafted based on family connections.

Bronny will likely spend a significant portion of his rookie season with the South Bay Lakers in the G League, which could help ease some of the pressure.

Nonetheless, as he embarks on his NBA journey, he will undoubtedly be under a microscope, especially given the high expectations that come with being LeBron's son.
