Hugh Freeze Questions Auburn's Options At Left Tackle Before Season Opener

The Auburn Tigers are currently trying to figure out what to do at left tackle.

The Tigers provided a depth chart to the media on Monday afternoon during a press conference with Hugh Freeze, and, well... it wasn't very valuable. Especially the defensive depth chart.

Every single position on defense had an OR listed for every position. There are no confirmed starters - at least, according to this depth chart. We seem to have a pretty good idea as to what DJ Durkin & Co. are going to do on that side of the ball. It's the offensive line that has some question marks for the Tigers.

The only OR listed for a starter on the offensive depth chart is at left tackle. Either Percy Lewis, a 6-foot-7, 355-pound Mississippi State Bulldogs transfer, OR Tyler Johnson, a 6-foot-6, 320-pound redshirt freshman will start. Tulsa transfer Jaden Muskrat is also in the mix.

Dillon Wade primary played tackle for the Tigers a season ago but has since moved to left guard. If needed, Auburn can move him back out and swap Lewis to the inside. Lewis would make for a huge guard, sure, but given his size it would be difficult to imagine him not getting any playing time. According to reports, he just hasn't been able to show any consistency during camp.

Center, right guard and right tackle are all known commodities. Connor Lew will get the nod in the middle of the line, with Jeremiah Wright and Izavion Miller at guard and tackle.

Forget all of that, though. Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze doesn't really care who goes out there on the first snap, and according to him there's not much drop off at some spots when dipping into the two-deep.

“Honestly, you know how I feel about depth charts from day one. I think they’re ridiculous and not accurate. And I’m not trying to hide something from you. But, honestly, I don’t even know who we have – I haven’t looked at it – at left tackle. Honestly, it’s going to be Percy (Lewis) or Tyler (Johnson) or maybe (Dillon) Wade. I mean, I don’t know," Freeze said. "And then defensively, we want to talk about defensive tackles. We’ve got six that we’re going to rotate in there. I could care less who goes out there on the first snap. I really don’t. I don’t care, and obviously, neither does DJ. We got 37 starters, so you better play a lot of guys earlier in the year. Really I know it doesn’t. I mean, I’m laughing about it, but to some people it matters. You know, to some kid it matters, to some mama it matters. So we’ll list them all as starters. The ones we think have earned the right to roll out there and play, and I really do mean it."

"I have no clue who DJ and his staff or Vontrell (King-Williams) are rolling out in the defensive front to start the game. Are we in odd or even, I don’t know, but if you’re in even…. Those other six in the middle, they all have been first team, second team or blue, orange teams as we refer to it, or white teams. I don’t see a ton of drop off really, so that’s not really a smokescreen.”
