McDermott on Roster Cuts: 'Extremely Difficult'

With the 2024 preseason wrapped up, the Buffalo Bills will have to make many crucial decisions in order to narrow down their initial 53-man roster. With multiple injuries and plenty of unexpected strong preseason performances, the team will have to make sacrifices in order to get their roster down to the required size.

Following the team's preseason loss to the Carolina Panthers, head coach Sean McDermott spoke about the challenge of cutting the roster down from the preseason.

"[It's] extremely difficult," said McDermott. "The relationships that we're blessed to have formed with these young men... You get a chance to learn that these guys are real human beings with real lives, and they're trying to make it. So you feel for them."

McDermott then continued, discussing how despite the process being hard, he's optimistic about the futures of all of the team's current players.

"Some of what I shared with them last night is that they're all gonna be just fine, no matter what happens," said McDermott. "I wanted them to know that they're prepared either way."

The Bills will have to make some tough decisions in multiple position groups, including the running backs room, as rookie Frank Gore Jr. finished the preseason as one of the team's most productive offensive players despite beginning the preseason with an outside chance of making the roster.

The Bills will have made those tough decisions when the 53-man roster is finalized for 2024 on Tuesday.
