Michigan State football is gearing up for a fresh start under head coach Jonathan Smith, who took the reins of the program nine months ago.

The team is looking to shake off the disappointments of last season, which ended with a 4-8 record and the departure of former coach Mel Tucker amid controversy.

As the Spartans prepare for their season opener against Florida Atlantic on Friday night, excitement is palpable.

Smith has emphasized the hard work put in during fall camp, where competition among players has been intense. With 61 new faces on the roster, including transfers and freshmen, building team chemistry has been a priority.

“It's something that we've been working really hard (on) and getting there,” Smith said Monday in his first game-week press conference with MSU.

“I was pleased with how fall camp went. I thought there was some competition in it throughout. These guys have been working against each other, and now I know they're excited to get someone else on the other side of the line of scrimmage.”

The upcoming game will be a significant test for the Spartans, as they look to see how well the new players have adapted.

Smith has indicated that while they have made progress, there’s still work to be done. He’s focused on ensuring the team is ready for the challenges of the season, particularly in terms of communication and execution on the field.

One of the key storylines is the debut of sophomore quarterback Aidan Chiles, who will be stepping into the starting role.

Having played as a backup last season, Chiles is expected to lead the offense without any planned substitutions for senior transfer Tommy Schuster.

Smith is confident in Chiles’ abilities and believes he can handle the pressure of starting in front of a home crowd.

“I think he's definitely ready for this,” Smith said . “He's a competitive player. And a true competitor understands it's not going to go perfect every snap, and things are going to take place.

"There's gonna be some really good plays, too. But there's nothing like experience. And the guy's been out on the field playing big-time football before. It just hasn't been on the first snap. And so we'll be there for him to get him adjusted.

“And we're confident that, in his preparation and his instincts and how competitive he is, that he'll give us a chance to score some points.”

In terms of team dynamics, Smith has noted that several positions have seen fierce competition, particularly on the defensive line and among the receivers. He anticipates rotating players throughout the game to keep the lineup fresh and effective.

As the Spartans prepare for their matchup against a Florida Atlantic team that also struggled last season, the focus will be on execution and adapting to game-day situations.

With a mix of new talent and returning players, Michigan State is eager to make a statement as they kick off the 2024 season.
