DeAngelo Williams, a standout running back drafted 27th overall by the Carolina Panthers in 2006, is celebrated as one of the franchise's all-time greats. Williams made an indelible mark over his nine-season tenure, playing in 117 career games with Carolina. He showcased his remarkable athleticism and consistency, becoming a key figure in the Panthers' offensive strategy and fan favorite.

From his rookie season, Williams demonstrated his potential, rushing for 501 yards and a touchdown, despite playing behind DeShaun Foster. By his second year, he began to solidify his role, accumulating 717 rushing yards and four touchdowns. His ability to catch passes out of the backfield added a versatile dimension to the Panthers' offense, making him a dual threat that defenses had to account for.

Williams' 2008 season was his breakout year and arguably the peak of his career. He rushed for a franchise-record 1,515 yards and an NFL-high 18 rushing touchdowns. His explosive speed and vision were on full display, particularly in games like the 186-yard, two-touchdown performance against the Detroit Lions and his dominant four-touchdown game against the New York Giants. That year, Williams didn't fumble once, a testament to his reliability and skill. Despite his stellar performance, he was controversially left out of the Pro Bowl, overshadowed by Washington running back Clinton Portis. However, his efforts did not go unrecognized as he earned All-Pro honors and was named Most Improved Player of the Year by Pro Football Weekly and the Professional Football Writers of America.

Williams continued to deliver strong performances in the following seasons, even as he battled injuries. In 2009, he rushed for 1,117 yards and seven touchdowns, further proving his status as one of the NFL's top running backs. This achievement marked the first time in franchise history that two running backs, Williams and Jonathan Stewart, both rushed for over 1,000 yards in the same season. Known as “Double Trouble,” the duo terrorized defenses and provided the Panthers with a potent ground attack.

In 2010, injuries limited Williams to just six games, but his resilience was evident as he bounced back in 2011 with 836 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. His adaptability was on display as the Panthers incorporated rookie quarterback Cam Newton, creating a diverse offensive scheme. Despite sharing carries with Stewart and Newton, Williams remained a vital part of the Panthers’ offensive success, helping them to a league-leading average in yards per carry and total touchdowns.

One of Williams' most memorable performances came in 2012, when he rushed for a career-high 210 yards against the New Orleans Saints in the season finale. His ability to perform at a high level, even later in his career, showcased his enduring talent and determination. Williams' leadership extended beyond his on-field performance, as he became a respected veteran voice in the locker room and an advocate for breast cancer awareness, honoring his late mother.

Williams finished his Panthers career with 6,846 rushing yards, second only to Jonathan Stewart in franchise history. He scored 46 rushing touchdowns and left a legacy marked by numerous franchise records, including the most rushing touchdowns in a season (18) and the most rushing yards in a game (210).

DeAngelo Williams' tenure with the Carolina Panthers was characterized by thrilling runs, reliable performances, and a dedication that endeared him to fans. His contributions helped shape the identity of the Panthers' offense for nearly a decade. As a central figure in some of the team’s most successful seasons, Williams remains a celebrated figure in Carolina’s football history, remembered not only for his athletic prowess but also for his character and contributions off the field.
